We Say...
One of Cash's greatest strengths was that he nearly always sang as well onstage as in the studio. This is as true on the jubilant "Hey Porter," from a 1955 appearance, as on the worn-down "Busted," from 1963. With his hardscrabble baritone riding trademark boom-chicka rhythms as tireless as the trains he often sings about, Cash bends boogie, country, pop and folk to his will, delivering "Give My Love to Rose" as an admonition and "Folsom Prison Blues" as an affirmation. "Big River" gets an uncharacteristically aggressive reading in this spirited survey of Cash's early career, while "Guess Things Happen That Way" is a weary sigh of helplessness.
