Performing in San Diego to their hometown crowd, the Black Heart Procession play a set that draws heavily from their first three albums, showcasing well-worn-in renditions of such favorites as "Blue Water, Black Heart," "Your Church is Red," and "It's a Crime. . .," as well as faithful versions of songs from their most recent album, 2002's Amore del Tropico. There are also shades of what's to come on "Song 101" — an in-the-works track that singer Pall Jenkins caveats by admitting he doesn't yet have lyrics for, "but I'm gonna see what can happen" — and it's intriguing.

The band's muscular take on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "You Got Lucky," however, is the true standout. The Southern gothic sound Black Heart Procession have cultivated over the years, coupled with Jenkins' casual, nasal delivery that so mimics Petty's own, makes this song a surprisingly natural turn for the band; it's the cover they were born to play.
